This week we are making our Perfect Pies! Time management will be very important as we have to make our pastry and filling, blind bake, fill, decorate and cook our own pies. After they have cooked we taste test and take photographs for our advertisements. Look for those ads as they will be uploaded soon. Phew what a full-on week!

This week Rooms 3, 5 & 7 are making biscuits! On Monday we finish off the first unit by making Chunky Chocolate Cookies (a firm favourite with all who try them). On Tuesday we started our new unit by making Anzac Biscuits. The first unit recipes have all been emailed to the students.

Aug 10th - Aug 15th
This week classes have been interrupted with snow and camp so we have had smaller groups than usual. We have finished planning our pies and completed our shopping lists and made choux pastry into chocolate eclairs. Some even attempted Choux Swans!

This week Rooms 3, 5 & 7 learnt about the Food Pyramid and what the food does for us, and made some sushi. Snow did mean we had some smaller classes but it was warm in class!
Rooms 1, 9 & 10 made their sushi and also a fruit crumble. Nothing beats a warm crumble on a cold day! Rooms 11 & 26 made their stir-fry and a fruit crumble. We had a variety of crumble toppings being made as rolled oats, cinnamon, sunflower seeds and the type of sugar were all optional. |

This week Rooms 2, 6 & 24 and Rooms 8 & 13 (Room 25 are on camp) made short pastry and turned them into either little fruit tarts or little mince pies. Rooms 4, 14 & 23 made their apple turnovers from their puff pastry and the little pies/tarts from short pastry. All the pastry is made in class. With their new found knowledge the students are going to plan their own "Perfect Pie."

This week Rooms 3, 5 & 7 made a simple beef stir-fry and fruit crumble. The stir-fry has a simple marinade for the beef and lots of vegetables served with rice. Most were eaten during class!
Rooms 1, 9 & 10 also made the stir-fry and Alison Holst's lemon crunch muffins. These muffins are are firm favourite with many families. Room 11 & 26 made the muffins on Wednesday afternoon, and on Thursday morning we had some visitors from China, so we made ANZAC Biscuits with them. Leo and his family joined in with the class and had fun making the biscuits with their new partners. |

July 27th - July 31st
This week Rooms 2 & 6 (Room 24 are away on camp), and Rooms 8, 13 & 25 made Puff Pastry and created Apple Turnovers with it. The room smelt fantastic with hot apple and pastry smells wafting about. Rooms 4, 14 & 23 made Lasanga. Lots of fun making a cheese sauce and a bolognese sauce from scratch. Yet more fantastic smells were coming from the kitchen.

This week Rooms 3, 5 & 7 made pizza from scratch and Lemon Crunch Muffins. The students made their dough and using the ingredients available chose their toppings for their pizza. Shapes and sizes varied around the room and they all looked great. I hope they were as good to eat as they looked!
Rooms 11 & 26, and 1, 9 & 10 made their scones and had a go at making their pizza. When they made their scones, they could make traditional or scrolls, sweet or savoury. |

July 20th - July 24th
Term 3 sees all groups change. We have also have a change in the Year 8 unit so watch this space to see some new recipes. This week we started off with the Savoury part of the unit and the students got a choice between Muffins or Scones. So many choices of shape, size and ingredients. They had to choose at least 3 of cheese, onion, herbs, paprika, ham, bacon and tomato paste. We had Calzone-style, and scrolls for the scones and some Texan and Medium sized muffins. Lots of yummy flavours came out of the kitchen this week!
Rooms 2,6 & 24 and 8,13 & 25 tried another new recipe - Lasagne. Lots of fun making a cheese sauce and a bolognese sauce from scratch. Fantastic smells were coming from the kitchen. |

A Change of term and a change of groups. We made a Banana-Berry Smoothie. Learning the routines of the room and where to find everything can be challenging as well as cooking within a time frame. But all 3 classes met this challenge very well.

Friday July 3rd
Today we had the Cup Cake Challenge judged by Ms Brady. The students had 2 hours to make a plate of 3 cup-cakes that shared a common theme. They have come a long way in the last 6 weeks from their first attempts. Great efforts from them all.

Last week of term saw the Mystery Box Challenge for all 3 classes. The class teachers became the Celebrity Judges and lots of great food were created. Food included sausage meat, chilli and baked beans, capsicums, mushrooms and onions. Sweet varieties included canned peaches, apricots and mandarins, cream cheese, oreo biscuits and marshmallows.

The last week of term. Rooms 3, 5 & 7 made their designer burgers and muffins. Yummy ideas and flavours were in the foods room. Rooms 11 & 26, and 1, 9 & 10 made designer pancakes. Some innovative ideas from this group.

June 22nd - June 26th
This week saw a mixed bag with every class doing something different.
Rooms 8, 13 & 25 made designer muffins and had a mystery box challenge. This involved a basic scone dough recipe and some mystery ingredients. Each table had different foods, some were sweet and some were savoury. They had to "rock-off" to decide which table they wanted and had 1 hour to create their masterpiece. Check out what they made. Rooms 2, 6 & 24 made their sweet short pastry and their little pies or fruit tarts. They only had one lesson this week due to the snow. Rooms 4, 14 & 23 made their biscuits and iced them on day 2. Gosh some tough decisions had to be made over which cutter to choose! |

This week all classes made Jam and then created a label to go on it. We learnt what has to go on a label and what is optional. We made kiwifruit jam as the they are in season and 99% of the time sets well. Hope you all enjoy your toast this weekend.

Today we had a go at making cake-pops. The hardest part was working with the chocolate which was setting very quickly! The cake mixture was quite light so we have worked out that we need a more dense cake mixture. Check out the results...look for the pug!

This week Rooms 2, 6 & 24, and 8, 13 & 25 made Iced Biscuits. On day 1 they made their dough and created their biscuits. We had animals, stars, hearts, people and rugby balls all over the room. They were either vanilla, chocolate or ginger biscuits. On day 2 they iced them. Using a simple flooding technique with icing bags, and all the colours of the rainbow, the biscuits were decorated in a wide variety of designs.
Rooms 4, 14 & 23 made short pastry that they turned into either little fruit tarts or mini pies and finally held their Ice-Cream Parlour. |

Rooms 3, 5 & 7 made their bread this week. Monday saw them make the basic recipe and practice their kneading and shaping skills. On Tuesday they designed their own bread. One group found out that yeast was needed to make bread rise, while another worked out how much chilli was too much! Many yummy smells coming out of the foods room on that day!
Rooms 1, 9 & 10, and 11 & 26 made designer muffins and burgers this week. Both recipes were adapted to suit their tastes and needs from a very basic idea. But each recipe had a twist to it! |

Today we designed a base for our fondant animal that we made last year. They were very creative, taking into account the natural habitat of the animal.

This week Rooms 3, 5 & 7 designed and made their Designer Anzac Biscuits. Some yummy flavour combinations were created. I hope you enjoyed them. Rooms 11 & 26, and 1, 9 & 10 made their Designer Bread. Using the recipe from last week and the choices from my table they had to design their own unique bread. A few interesting combinations were made. Hope they were tasty!

This week 2 classes held their Ice-Cream Parlour which were very successful, and the warmer weather helped. Rooms 2, 6 & 8 made their Apple Turnovers, and Rooms 8, 13 & 25 made little Fruit Tarts and mini mince pies. Room 23 were on camp so Rooms 4 & 14 made designer muffins. It was interesting to see who had remembered what from Y7!

Friday 5th June
Today we tackled fondant icing. First we made a rose using a simple method involving plastic bags, spoons and thumbs. Once we made our roses we started our fondant animals. We had done some research on fondant animals and worked out ones we wanted to do. That was the easy part! For the rest of the time we modelled, shaped and sculpted our animals learning a lot along the way. Check out our results...

This week saw some groups make their ice-cream for selling. Others made their own puff pastry and create Apple Turnovers. Some pastry was more successful than others due to the amount of water added at the start!

This week Rooms 3, 5 & 7 finally get to make their Chunky Chocolate Cookies. They should have got an emailed copy of all the recipes they have used so far this term. If you haven't please let me know.
Room 11 & 26, and 1, 9 & 10 started on their bread. This is a simple bread dough that they make plain rolls with on day 1. It is a very yummy bread recipe - I hope some got home! |

Friday 29th May
We have a very large group of talented Y8s this year and our first lesson went well. We made our batch of cupcakes. We looked at all the toys we could play with, made some buttercream icing and had a quick tutorials of ideas. Then we were let loose to try out these ideas. Hopefully some make it home!

The snow brought a few changes to the planned itinerary this week. The Year 8's played with chocolate. Learning our to use moulds, pipe, and decorate with either dark, white or milk chocolate. The cold temperatures made keeping our chocolate vicious enough to pipe before hardening a challenge but it was fun. Some classes made their final ice-creams ready to sell in the parlours.

Snow impacted on our lessons this week and slight change in what we were doing. Rooms 3, 7 & 5 on Monday made yummy designer Muffins as we were a very small group. Tuesday saw them discuss What and Why we eat. Rooms 1, 9 & 10, and 11 & 26 have started their new unit "I Made This!" We start planning our designer biscuits on Wednesday and Thursday we will make them for our family to critic them. (They are supposed to be designed for the family to enjoy so hopefully you do!)

This week we finished our advertisements and made some Choux Pastry into Chocolate Eclairs. With Year 8 Camps on we are starting our Pastry unit before our Parlours are opened.

This week we are sampling the base ice-creams and making plans with our groups to work out our flavour ideas. We are also making some Tuiles and Cats Tongues. Tuiles are a wafer thin biscuit that is often eaten with ice-cream, but these days often feature as a side to a dessert. Have you watched My Kitchen Rules lately? They have to be crunchy and paper-thin!

This week Rooms 3, 5 & 7 are making their own Pizza and Lemon Crunch Muffins. The Pizza Recipe is one of Jamie Oliver's and we use Instant Active Yeast which speeds up the yeast reaction time.
Rooms 1, 9 & 10, and 11 & 26 are making a simple Beef Stir-Fry and Fruit Crumble. Now the weather is a little cooler a crumble is a yummy way of eating a warm fruity dessert. |

We started the week with Rooms 3,5 & 7 making their sushi. Then we swapped groups around. We made Smoothies and organised our books, and finished with scones. Some chose to make pinwheel scones. Combinations of plain, cheese, and cheese and sweet chilli were chosen.

Our final recipe for Food Tech is Iced Biscuits. We have over 150 cutters to choose from and on Day One we make the biscuits and Day Two sees us ice them. We had a lot of fun using icing bags and learnt some new techniques like flooding and feathering.

Rooms 4,14 & 23 got an extra lesson this week because of Anniversary Day, so they made designer muffins. I think we were thinking of Easter as lots of chocolate flavours were being created! |
